Dabei bleibt das Schleich-Actionspiel dem.The Bloom is off 'Der Rosenkavalier'When the curtain rose on the second act of the Met's new production of Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier, the audience applauded and cheered for the set. Represented onstage was the circa- 1. Josef Hoffmann Kubus chairs and Fledermaus tables, and a black- figure freeze, taller than a man, wrapping around the high grey walls. It was beautifully done.
So was the silk and painting- covered palace of the traditional aristocracy in the first act, a set which used three matching pairs of receding double doors (white with gold trim) to create an extraordinary sense of space and depth. When the production team appeared on stage for their curtain call, after the singers and the conductor had been riotously applauded, they were booed. And since Brigitte Reiffenstuel, who designed pitch- perfect costumes, looked concerned, we should clarify on behalf of the audience: She deserves applause. The set designer, Paul Steinberg, deserves downright adulation. Der Rosenkavalier MetDavid McVicar's sumptuous period staging of Richard Strauss' comic masterpiece returns with a first-class cast. The Marschallin, a 30-something aristocrat, is having. It was only the director, Robert Carsen, who was booed—heavily—and deserved it. His third act took the previously accrued goodwill of an eager audience and blew it all to hell. There is nothing wrong with changing an opera's setting from what was originally intended. Just keep in mind that the composer and librettist chose their setting for a particular reason, and changing that setting is like changing the key of the music. Still, it can work. And this particular change—replacing 1. Vienna with the 1. Der Rosenkavalier OperaVienna in which the opera originally debuted—is a promising idea. It worked well for two acts and was ruined in the third by raunchy vulgarity of the sort that belongs in Berlin's Komische Oper. Buy Der Rosenkavalier Tickets! Richard Strauss’s “Der Rosenkavalier,” with its melding of bittersweet nostalgia and antic comedy, usually zeroes in on the character of the Marschallin, the. At the Met, it made the comedy grotesque and the audience uncomfortable. Mr. Carsen thinks he was being sophisticated. Maybe he was. But his third act is a cataclysm of bad taste that distracts from the music, ruins the action, and overshadows some of the finest singing performances in recent memory. Richard Strauss, a serious if humorless composer, loved the female voice. He wrote three out of four of the main roles for soprano or mezzo- soprano, including the rosenkavalier himself: the young male romantic lead is a so- called "breeches role," in this production sung by Elīna Garanča. The young Latvian mezzo, with her boyish good looks and scrupulously masculine movement, is vastly more convincing than was Alice Coote in the Met's recent Idomeneo. Her acting is superb and her voice is even better: round, resonant, neither heavy nor light, like burnished copper. When her male character piles into woman's clothing to escape from her lover's chambers, the audience laughs without consciously sorting it all out. The rosenkavalier, or "knight of the rose," is sent by a boorish noble cousin to present a silver rose to the cousin's fiancée as a token of betrothal. The boorish noble is the Baron Ochs, German for "ox", a comically low- class blue- blood. The demanding role is sung by bass Günther Groissböck, whose acting was excellent and whose singing was halfway to excellent. He had great power in the upper register but slid into weak low notes. His intended fiancée, who of course falls in love with the rosenkavalier at first sight, is sung by Erin Morley, who has a delightful voice perfectly matched to the role and the character. The final love- duet between Miss Morely and Miss Garanča is graceful, beautiful, touching—and once again overshadowed by Robert Carsen's bright ideas. And Renée Fleming is here. She plays the grande dame of the story, the young knight's lover and Field Marshall's wife. A recent and misleading New York Times headline suggested that Miss Fleming was retiring from the opera. She is not. But she is retiring from this particular role, which she first sang for the Met in 2. With less power than her younger self, her voice is delectable, textured, and rich. When she closes the first act with her aria on the passing of time and the fickleness of man's affections, we feel it completely. She turns and walks away through three sets of doors and the audience wants to run after her. Conductor Sebastian Weigle was not in his finest form on opening night—his orchestra was sloppy in the short overture and for much of the first act. The score is difficult and requires more attention. Especially because the music continues seamlessly through each act. It takes great care to let the audience hear how the music shapes, pushes and pulls the story at each moment. Strauss is somewhere in between Wagner's linearity (which is like watching a flower bloom—in real time) and Schummann's more readily consumable phrasing (like eating a box of chocolates). Strauss is a little self- indulgent, like a box of chocolates that eats itself. He is at his best when most strictly on his guard, and the famous closing trio in which the grande dame releases her protégé to pursue his young love, sung by Misses Fleming, Garanča and Morley, is a luscious tour- de- force. Which makes it even more of a shame that Mr. Carsen put his own semi- artistic urges above the music, the singers and his audience. As things stand, he has two- thirds of a fine production. Der Rosenkavalier (1. IMDb. From the beginning, silent film showings were not silent; depending on the status of the theatre, different melodies accompanied always those film showings. Coughing or marital discussions together with children howling were the music accompaniment in small theatres of towns without resources; improvised or popular songs were played at the piano in medium theatres in provincial towns; orchestras provided the music in elegant theatres in reputable and important capital cities. Some important European composers were seduced by the possibilities and importance of the cinema and composed or adapted their own compositions to be played live in those important theatres. This happened with the German composer Herr Richard Strauss who recomposed and adapted his famous and successful opera "Der Rosenkavalier" ( The Knight Of The Rose ) for the screen, capturing the spirit of that musical comedy of three acts, not to mention that the screenplay was written by Herr Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the opera's librettist, and last but not least, the great German director Herr Robert Wiene, directed the film version for the silent screen, three German aces in the same silent project, certainly. Obviously the German aristocrats prefer to watch ( while catching up on their sleep ) opera at the Opera House and not in a coarse theatre but it must be admitted that this silent film adaptation provides a good vehicle for lazy and modern youngsters to acquaint themselves with such an elegant musical spectacle. The story: While her husband is becoming famous in the war, the marshal of Werdenberg's wife consoles herself in the arms of the youngster Octavian and tries to arrange the love affairs of her cousin, the baron Ochs, by presenting him to young Sophie. This baron is taken with her and the Marschallin proposes Octavian to be his "Rosenkavalier" in order to present the traditional silver rose to his fiancée. But youngsters are youngsters and sex hormones hold sway over the whole world so for that reason immediately Octavian and Sophie fall in love with each other… This film adaptation of "Der Rosenkavalier" is one of the better of "grandiose" German costume films and Teutonic film operetta. It's an elegant and romantic film beautifully made in artistic terms ( excellent and varied set design, not to mention, obvious soigné costumes ) , technically excellent and wittily made ( flashbacks and a Sibylline use of the ellipsis ) in order to condense and adapt Herr Strauss' opera original story for the screen. This hard task is very well accomplished, summarizing successfully three aristocratic love stories full of love conspiracies and maintaining intact the spirit of the opera on which it was based ( it combines the theatrical and cinema virtues very well ). It does not depend exclusively on its musical spectacle merits but works as an independent and original film production. The many classic court ceremonies and the elegant atmosphere makes for one of those delicious and decadent German exaggerated operettas that the aristocracy likes so much."Der Rosenkavalier" was excellently and recently restored by the German- French TV. Channel "ARTE" which reconstructed the missing end of the film with some stills and obviously includes the original Herr Strauss film score. The restored silent film was premiered at Dresden ( that German city that some bad- mannered youngsters blew into pieces sometime ago ) in the "Semperoper", that magnificent Semper Opera House in which in the year 1. Herr Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" made its first stage appearance. And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must dance a waltz and sing an aria at the same time. If YOU would like to share your favourite Christmas Story with other storytellers, please send it to me. I will give you full credit! The first one is by courtesy of Taffy Thomas. It is one that he tells from his vast repertoire of Christmas tales. I call it: The Iron Winter and the Raggedy Old Man. The Little Lame Donkey. A Christmas Tale Rotten TomatoesThe Three Ages of Man. Santa's Little Secret! I started my Christmas shopping yesterday by visiting a well known high street discount bookshop. They had a good priced Beatrix Potter boxed set of ten 'Peter Rabbit' stories and I thought I'd buy it for my great grandson – he's not old enough yet to read them but they were good value and his mother will read them to him in due course. As I was handing over the payment, I noticed a colourful copy of 'The Night Before Christmas' also at what appeared to be a good price and I bought that as well. I feel it is the role of the grandfather/great grandfather to introduce quality reading to the little ones! However when I got home and examined my purchase (the Christmas book) I discovered that despite the attractive packaging, the text was a dumbed down badly written ersatz version of this great Christmas classic! They talk about mince pies and milk, for goodness sake! Someone in their wisdom (probably a twenty something university graduate who thinks she knows best) obviously considers that today's children will not understand the beautifully written language used by the original writer with all of its richness and texture! The poem has been in existence in its original form for nearly two hundred years and has delighted millions of children in that time and I'll bet it will still be around for another two hundred years exactly as Clement Clarke Moore told it to his children. The publisher of this work should be sued and whoever wrote such banal drivel (no author is named, although they do identify the illustrator) should be forced to live in shame in a cave! It goes back to the shop tomorrow! End of rant! While on the subject of books, if anyone is looking for a nice Christmas book this year, I can heartily recommend Wilford Kale's 'A Very Virginia Christmas'. It is a collection of short Christmas stories from a variety of sources - some well known tales, some not so well known and some personal reminiscence. It is the kind of book with which you will want to curl up on the setee, with a glass of something warm and be transported back in time. I love the book - but then, I contributed one of the tales! This must be my year for receiving personal Christmas stories! Here is one from Ken Patterson, an ex- serviceman from the early 1. It seems appropriate at this time of the year, when many of us are thinking of loved ones who are serving their country in lands far away, to remember that this isn't something new! It was just by the coincidence of shipping to Turkey in June that my 1. December. But for one who loves Christmas so intensely, December 1. States. I had a 4. U. S. Air Force before heading to my next assignment in Japan. In between, I would be relaxing with Mom, Dad, and my sister Nancy, in our home outside of Boston. Having spent so long in Turkey, making frequent visits to Istanbul and other places, I had compiled a number of unique gifts: I had wall hangings from Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, hand- carved meerschaum pipes from stores I'd found along narrow, cobblestoned streets, worry beads from the Blue Mosque, gifts from Yalova on the Sea of Marmara, and more. I had carefully packaged them up and shipped them home long before my departure. They would be waiting for me upon my arrival in Massachusetts, and I could wrap them then. Climbing into a battered blue van on the morning of December 1. Karamursel Air Station. Shortly, I was aboard a Gooney Bird - - an old DC- 3 of Turk Hava Yolari - - headed on a 1. Sea of Marmara to Istanbul. A brief wait there, and a Pan Am jet continued my journey westward - - Rome, Paris, then over the Atlantic to New York. One final hop to Boston, and my family met me for the drive home. I was a shocked to learn my package hadn't yet arrived, but with a week to go, and other Christmas preparations, the worry was held at bay. Day by day, I expected a Post Office van to pull up out front. The time passed. On the 2. Dad's recordings of Christmas music brought back the joys of earlier holidays. The bare, snow- free world outside was a disappointment, but at least I was home with family, even if my exotic gifts were not. Mom, Dad, and Nan were done with their own preparations; the wrapping paper all used up, the ribbons and tags now few and scattered. The big day was nearly upon us. Familiar music was in the air. My gifts from Turkey were nowhere to be seen. Many people seem to feel that December 2. Christmas Eve - - the whole day. But, "eve" means evening, and to me, Christmas Eve does not arrive until dusk. As daylight faded that day, my disappointment grew deeper. I wondered if my package was gone forever, lost in some far- off land. About 6 pm - - and I remember this so clearly - - someone knocked at the front door. Obviously, it had to be a neighbor; no commercial entity would be out and about at that hour. I opened the door to face a US Mailman, fur- lined collar turned up against the chill, a huge smile on his face. Merry Christmas!" he said, holding out my package from so long ago and so far away. I brought it to my room. Mom offered a roll of shiny white shelf paper and a handful of red ribbon. I opened the carton, wrapped everything in the same white and red, and hurried them all under the tree. One of my greatest ever Christmases was just around the corner. As the flames in our big stone fireplace crackled, and familiar carols filled the house, I glanced outside. There, in total silence, heavy snow began to fall, transforming the landscape. I have been sent a link to a rather nice Christmas story. It particulaly appeals because of the beautifully presented setting. I think you will like this: Chris Keane wrote to me a few weeks ago offering a personal story about his family's attempt to arrive on time to the Christmas Mass. I liked the story but felt that it might be a bit long for inclusion on this page. However the tale really does typify in an amusing way the somewhat chaotic experience of a large and loving family when trying to organise a collective outing! And anyway - it's Christmas! So here it is... Chris Keane. My father barreled through our packed family room. Come on, guys! Put those toys away and get ready for church!” The white shaving cream covering his face like a beard was yet another reminder that Santa was on the way. Don’t just sit there. Get ready!” He yelled, tripping over a pile of Legos. We’re going to be on time.”From the couch, I spotted my Mom peering in from the kitchen. She looked focused, like a great military leader assessing a potentially dangerous situation. It definitely looked bleak from the ground. The neighbors hadn’t been sent home. The dog wasn’t walked. My brothers and I weren’t dressed. The Grandmas weren’t bundled up. My baby brother wasn’t changed. My sister was on the phone. And, the church was all the way across town! Being late for mass had become a major problem every since my father convinced himself that our family was targeted in a political cartoon that landed in our church bulletin just after Thanksgiving. The cartoon poked fun at a family for sneaking into church late. I had to admit, the drawing of a large Irish- looking family piling out of station wagon looked a lot like us. In our church, nestled in an affluent neighborhood outside town, families typically came in neatly wrapped packages of four, not seven. Parishioners typically rode in sleek BMWs, not big old station wagons. But, little did Father Dave and the rest of the congregation know, the Mc. Cormick family was firing on all cylinders that night. My brothers and I dropped our toys and bolted up stairs to get changed. My sister slammed down the phone and sent our neighbors home. Even our family dog helped out by waiting patiently by the door to go out. This probably had less do with my Dad’s little speech, than the shadow of Santa which loomed large over our household. Whatever the reason, we actually left the house on time! My Dad scooped up my baby brother from the floor like a pigskin on Super Bowl Sunday as he ran out the door. It was snowing and a white dusting already covered the lawn. My brothers and I played games in the rear bucket- seats of our old Country Squire. The back of the station wagon was very cold. I could actually see my breath. There was no way those puny dashboard vents would make the trek all the way to our corner of the car universe. We passed the time drawing on the windows until my younger brother found a half- frozen Mc. Donalds ketchup packet. Unable to resist its inanimate charm, he squeezed it just to see what would happen. In a blink, it squirted the back of the Grandmas’ hair and coats. The car got very quiet all of a sudden. My brothers and I looked at each other in shock. My Dad drove on steadily. About halfway to the church we all smelled it. Seriously, this was one large, toxic whoopsie! No one in the car could breathe. My baby brother started crying as he realized he was found out. My father, clearly flustered, did a K- turn in the middle of a dark two lane road as cars whizzed by. Next thing I can remember, we peeled into the driveway nearly taking out our Santa lawn ornament. Most people have thought about killing themselves at one, or more, times in their lives. As a counselor I have often been asked to give someone one good reason to go on living. The problem with that question is what one person thinks is a good reason to live will not seem good enough to another person. In 1. 98. 3 the Journal of Counseling and Clinical Psychology (Vol 5. No 2) published a study conducted by Linehan, Goodstein, Nielsen & Chiles which contained a list of reasons people gave for continuing to live when they were considering suicide. Here is the list of reasons people gave in that study. Some of them may give you food for thought or a reason to live you never thought about before. I hope so. Reason number one is the reason I would most encourage you to work towards making your own. You may have reasons not listed here; reasons you think might help someone carry on living in the face of despair. Please feel free to add your suggestion to the “Reasons To Live Wall” . I have added one of my own reasons for living that were not included in the above list. Yes, I have been suicidal. You can read about my own battle with suicide here. Next. Anyone suffering from high levels of anxiety is at risk of developing a phobia. One of the most common phobias is claustrophobia, or the fear of enclosed spaces. For someone with a disabling phobia, the realisation that this fear is irrational and that treatment is needed can cause further anxiety. Since most treatment options depend on confronting the feared situation or object, the person may feel reluctant. Support and encouragement from family and friends is crucial.
